Woburn’s Callie Murphy Leads By Example
February 10th, 2010 by brianWoburn’s Callie Murphy was featured in an article in the Daily Times Chronicle this week in which her role in the success of the Woburn girls varsity team’s success is detailed. A returning All-Star from a season ago, Murphy should be an All-League candidate this season as she is having a terrific year for her 11-4 club. Murphy is fourth in the league in scoring with 14.8 points per game and is near the tops on the team in steals, assists and rebounds all while being guarded by the opposing player’s top defender each night.
As the story describes, as great as Murphy has been on the court, she has been even more integral to the team’s success as a leader. One of Callie’s quotes reads, “I feel like I try to lead by example. I want to work as hard as I can and hopefully that will get the other girls to work as hard as they can too. I try to tell everyone to give 100 percent and if I see them getting down I do whatever I can to try and pick them up.”
Murphy’s philosophy of hard work started in November, when she and Erin Maguire organized a group of Woburn players to participate in AE’s Preseason Girls Hoops Program, including: Paige Carbone, Gabi Parker, and Shannon Maguire. The group met 3 times a week for 90 minutes each day for the 3 weeks leading up to tryouts. The workouts combined off-court speed, agility, strength and conditioning with on-court skill development to prepare each player for their upcoming season. Day in and day out, Murphy and Maguire pushed their teammates to work harder than anyone else and it has obviously translated into their play on the court.
