Despite a tough loss to Stoneham on Friday night, the Reading girls varsity basketball team locked up a share of the Middlesex League title. Much of the team’s success continues to hinge upon key players such as junior captain Carlene Kluge; seniors Dana Powers, and Amanda Flower; and freshmen sensations Oliva Healy and Morgan O’Brien. These girls all participated in AE’s Preseason Hoops Program, which met 3 times a week for 3 weeks in November. The program combined off-court speed, agility, strength and conditioning training with on-court skill development to prepare each player for tryouts and the upcoming season.

Several other players – Desh Perera, Gracie Starble – participate in other AE programs year round and we are proud to say that they are a part of our athlete base. Congratulations to all the girls for their hard work and success and best of luck in the tournament!

Woburn’s Callie Murphy was featured in an article in the Daily Times Chronicle this week in which her role in the success of the Woburn girls varsity team’s success is detailed. A returning All-Star from a season ago, Murphy should be an All-League candidate this season as she is having a terrific year for her 11-4 club. Murphy is fourth in the league in scoring with 14.8 points per game and is near the tops on the team in steals, assists and rebounds all while being guarded by the opposing player’s top defender each night.

As the story describes, as great as Murphy has been on the court, she has been even more integral to the team’s success as a leader. One of Callie’s quotes reads, “I feel like I try to lead by example. I want to work as hard as I can and hopefully that will get the other girls to work as hard as they can too. I try to tell everyone to give 100 percent and if I see them getting down I do whatever I can to try and pick them up.”

Murphy’s philosophy of hard work started in November, when she and Erin Maguire organized a group of Woburn players to participate in AE’s Preseason Girls Hoops Program, including: Paige Carbone, Gabi Parker, and Shannon Maguire. The group met 3 times a week for 90 minutes each day for the 3 weeks leading up to tryouts. The workouts combined off-court speed, agility, strength and conditioning with on-court skill development to prepare each player for their upcoming season. Day in and day out, Murphy and Maguire pushed their teammates to work harder than anyone else and it has obviously translated into their play on the court.

AE’s Jim McCaffrey was a featured story in the Daily Times Chronicle on Tuesday, where his many accomplishments throughout a stellar career at BB&N were highlighted and his future plans to attend Boston College on a full football scholarship were covered as well. Throughout the article, Jim mentions how AE was such a large part of his success both at the high school level as well as in combines leading up to his offer from BC. One quote reads, “Those guys at Athletic Evolution just did an incredible job in getting a training regimen going for me. I probably wouldn’t be where I am right now if it weren’t for them.”

Jim continues to train at AE as he prepares for preseason camp in the fall.
