When a young athlete has been sidelined by an injury, there's usually one question on everyone's mind: When can they play again?

Being pain-free is important, but it doesn't necessarily mean an athlete is ready for competition. A safe return to sport requires adequate strength, mobility, balance, coordination, sport-specific ability, and confidence. Depending on the injury, objective testing can also help determine whether the athlete is prepared for the demands they'll face on the field, court, track, or ice.

At Athletic Evolution Woburn, we work with youth and young adult athletes throughout the return-to-sport process. As students head back to school and fall sports ramp up, here are seven signs parents should consider before assuming their athlete is ready to get back in the game.

1. Their Pain Is Gone—or Well Controlled During Sport-Specific Movement

The first thing most parents look for is pain.

If the knee no longer hurts while walking around the house, that's certainly progress. But everyday movement isn't the same as playing soccer, football, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, or another competitive sport.

An athlete may feel completely fine during normal daily activities and still experience symptoms when asked to sprint, jump, land, cut, accelerate, decelerate, or change direction.

That's why return-to-sport rehabilitation needs to gradually expose athletes to the movements their sport actually requires.

For example, a soccer player returning from a knee injury may need to demonstrate that they can tolerate running before progressing to sprinting. From there, they may work on changes of direction, cutting, reactive movements, and eventually drills that more closely resemble competition.

The question shouldn't only be, "Does it still hurt?"

A better question is, "Can their body tolerate what their sport is going to ask them to do?"

2. Strength Has Returned—Not Just on the Injured Side

Strength is one of the most important components of returning to sport safely.

After an injury, athletes can lose strength surprisingly quickly. This is particularly relevant after surgery or extended periods of reduced activity.

Why Returning Too Quickly Can Be a Problem
